In this blog I will compare the top 3 goaltenders in the NHL for the 2009-10 regular season. Each goaltender will be critiqued on their save percentage, goals against average and total wins. The 3 goaltenders are Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres, Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins and Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes.
First is Ryan Miller, who is leading the NHL in save percentage. Ryan Miller is currently leading the NHL with a save percentage of 92.9%. This meaning that he has faced 1850 shots and only allowing 131 goals this season. That is a staggering amount considering he has played 61 games. Yet in the goals against average he is ranked second with an average of 2.20 a game. Miller really drops of in the wins category being ranked sixth. While playing 61 games he has only won 36, this not being too great considering he is one of the candidates for being the top goaltender for this season.
Second is Tuukka Rask, who is leading the NHL in goals against average with 2.08. Yet this is not as great as it seems considering he has only played 36 games the least of the three. Although in save percentage he is ranked second with 92.8%, but he has only faced 991 shots. Allowing 71 goals, the shots are nearly doubled by Ryan Miller. In total wins Rask is far behind being ranked 26, with 17 from the 36 games hes played. Yet he has recently overtaken Tim Thomas for starting goalie in Boston.
Third is Ilya Bryzgalov, who is leading with the most wins with 39 out of 62 games. By having more wins than losses he is a huge reason why the Coyotes are close to taking top position in the western conference. Yet in goals against average he is ranked fourth with a 2.28. This being not too far behind the other goalies; only a difference of 0.20. Yet in 62 games his save percentage is rated ninth with 92.1%. Facing 1758 shots and stopping all but 139, which is still quite the accomplishment.
